Text of Vice-President’s address at International Gita Mahotsav 2024 (Excerpts)

Hon’ble Governor Haryana, Shri Bandaru Dattatreya ji, Chief Minister of Haryana, Shri Nayab Singh Saini ji, a man connected to the ground, a character who is immaculate, persevering and has complete understanding. I had met in the first term before and after becoming the Chief Minister, in the first term, in the second term, I have met in a few seconds, I have met many times.

I am confident as never before that the state of Haryana is a country of limitless possibilities, a state which is at the head of its country. The talent here is phenomenal in every field. There will be total exploitation of the talent of every Haryanvi under his leadership. I have no doubt in my mind, Naib Singh Saini ji will definitely do something unique.

Swami Gyananand Ji Maharaj, when I had the privilege of coming here for the first time, I had a lot of discussions with you, which is called this, is it not? They made a very good start and that beginning is going on continuously.

It is not on incremental but virtually vertical trajectory. Your effort is commendable, you deserve kudos. One thing you said with which I disagreed, he said, “Dr. Sudesh Dhankar, my wife has come with me, I have come with her.” I have taken a lot of risks in life, but I cannot take such risks. My wife was educated in Haryana, the girl from Haryana will show her strength wherever she goes

For the last three days, the historic Shrimad Bhagwat Week is being organized by the venerable Shri Pundrik Goswami Ji Maharaj in the premises of Vice-President House. Today was the third day of Shrimad Bhagwat, in the morning. I’m coming back energized. Amazing knowledge was attained. It was very thought-provoking. A dialogue came out from Pundrik Maharaj Ji’s mouth – When the Sangh is good in the adverse situation of life, a lot can be achieved.

Just as Arjuna was in a time of great adversity in his family war and he found a companion like Lord Shri Krishna, which led to knowledge like Gita, which has guided the whole world today. And when these words come out of such a person, respected Shri Pundrik Goswami ji, he comes from the holy tradition, the splendor is unparalleled. Sri Man Madhav Godeshwar is the chief acharya of the Vaishnavacharya tradition, whose lineage tradition is associated with the golden history of Indian spiritualism.

I had the opportunity to hear his blessings in West Bengal. It was amazing this morning. From 8:00 a.m. to two and a half hours, I and my relatives listened. In the end, it came down to the Gita. “You will not come back from where you are going today to this situation.

Today, coming to this holy land of Kurukshetra, which is the land where Lord Shri Krishna gave that sermon to Arjuna which is a guide for all of us. It will be a moment ever cherished by me. When he said, “Partner is found, I felt that the partner or the charioteer plays a very decisive role. Your province has got the people’s partner and charioteer in the form of Naib Saini and after 6 decades of creating history for more than ten years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has got the privilege of becoming the charioteer of the country, this incident has happened after sixty years. How decisive the role of companions and charioteers is that India has seen in ten years – unimaginable economic progress, unbelievable institutional structure, which India did not think is getting the status that India had not imagined. India’s voice is on a high today. We are the superpower of the world, but we have chosen a path, that path of Developed Bharat at 2047.

Developed India is no longer a dream, developed India is the goal before us, we have to keep that knowledge of Gita in mind to achieve this goal. The concentration that Arjuna showed, Arjuna’s eyes were not on the fish, Arjuna’s eyes were not even on the fish’s eye, Arjuna’s eyes were on his target. We have to have the same vision, the same vision, the same determination, the same concentration, so that India will definitely achieve the status of a developed nation by 2047 or earlier. There is no doubt in my mind that it will happen.

I have seen a lot in the last four decades of politics, I have felt the vibration while being a Member of Parliament and as a Minister at the Centre. I have seen India’s gold, the India that used to be called the ‘Golden Bird’, being mortgaged to two banks in Switzerland to save credibility. Jewelry is pawned when the situation is worrisome, dignity has to be saved. And what was the reason for that? Our foreign reserves were eating up at around a billion US dollars.

Today this foreign reserve has reached 650 US Billion Dollars, 680 US Billion Dollars, sometimes 700 US Billion Dollars. Four to five billion dollars are added in a week. I went to Kashmir, was a member of the Council of Ministers, it was 1990. No more than a couple of people were seen on the street. How much energy must have come in me, how much encouragement I must have felt when I was sitting on the chair of the Rajya Sabha as Chairman and the answer was given by the government that in the last two years the number of tourists in Jammu and Kashmir is more than two crore.

Even today there are some ignorant people in India who do not know the real nature of India. They should open their senses, they should see that today’s India is the India that is being praised by them. The International Monetary Fund is praising that today there is a shining star in the world, today there is a land where opportunities can be found, where investment can be made, that is India.

Mobile technology, the world has been stunned. It was said that people in India are not educated. Today, the person who is less educated in the village, he uses mobile more than the educated. And this is the reason that if we look at the consumption of internet according to the time, then we are even ahead of both China and Japan together.

And the transaction of money, people did not understand why the Prime Minister of India is opening bank accounts, and how many fifty crore people have opened bank accounts, the population of Europe will not be that much, I think, even if 70-80 countries of the world are found, but the result has come. Our transactions are being done transparently, there is no need for electricity bills, no lines, no water bill, no application for telephones, no examinations, and I want to tell you from this holy land today that the youth of the country have to pay attention to one thing, the possibilities for them. They are much better than government jobs.

After all, the International Monetary Fund did not brag about our government job. What opportunity was he talking about? That is to be seen and a lot needs to be done. Hon’ble Chief Minister, you will have to work for two days in a day. Your capacity is to be increased to three days in a day, but I will ask for two days.

Today I thought a lot about what message of Gita should I give to the citizens from this place, which is in their control, which they should do, in which they do not need anyone else. So, the five important ideals that have been shown, I am presenting them in the form of Governance Panchamrit. It has come from the Gita and every citizen can do it. He just needs to take a resolve. And these principles I have seen are very important for social order, for peace, for development, for brotherhood, for progress, for being happy.

And the first is meaningful dialogue. And what is the precedent for meaningful dialogue? The dialogue between Shri Krishna and Arjuna teaches us that differences should not become disputes. There will be differences, people’s minds will run in different ways. The Constituent Assembly saw these differences and resolved them. In 18 sessions, the Constituent Assembly debated and debated. And we should not boast about this principle and find a way to have a meaningful dialogue. No disturbance, no disruption, no sloganeering, no placard.

So, this message is very big and I hope that our Members of Parliament, our Members of Legislative Assembly, our public representatives in Panchayat and Nagar Palika and every person among themselves, in every institution, will take care that the dialogue is meaningful, the outcome of the dialogue is not in personal interest, it should be in the interest of the society, it should be in the interest of the country. No interest is bigger than the society and the national is paramount.

The second, which I hinted at a little earlier—that of personal probity.

It is very much needed. What we should do is that the conduct of people who are in any position – whether it is an administrative post, a political post or in the economic world – should be ideal. Must be exemplary, must impress the public. They must exemplify by conduct that is worth emulating. It will have a huge impact on society.

A lot of steps have been taken for this, VIP culture has been frustrated, the light on the car has been curbed. It doesn’t make much difference, but it evokes a feeling. A sense of equality, a sense of purity.

The third principle is selfless sacrifice. Lord Krishna says, ‘Yajñārthātkarno’. Think of governance as a sacrifice, not a means of personal gain. Keeping this in mind, I appeal to you that it is a big yagna to have a developed India in 2047. Everyone should be sacrificed in this yagna, there should be sacrifice as much as possible, so that the full sacrifice is in the interest of the country. It is the duty of every citizen.

The fourth principle is compassion!

Compassion is our heritage, the essence of 5000 years of culture. We have shown what compassion is. Saini ji, I was the Chief Minister of West Bengal, keeping in view the compassion at the time of Covid, how we have faced this crisis and Indian culture is so impressed with compassion that India gave Covid vaccine to more than a hundred countries during that period when the challenge was also on us. Even today, if a ship is stopped under the sea in the world, then the Indian Navy goes. If one’s students have to be evacuated during the war, India also helps them, brings its own students, its citizens. In a world where there is an earthquake, there is a shortage, there is starvation, India is the first responder – Karuna! But I think the common man should also pay attention to compassion.

But competition does not mean war, there is no opponent today, he can have a different opinion, he can be an opponent. It is very important to us because our country. Just imagine the kind of diversity we have and all this convergence to unity, I thought that now the government can be named Panchamrit.

Today, the country is facing some such crises. That’s what we’re sensing. There are some forces in the country and abroad who want to injure India, to hurt our economy, to make our institutions dysfunctional by using the machinery by increasing the narrative on the basis of organized money power.

Their sinister design, pernicious object is to taint, tarnish and diminish our Constitutional Institutions to run down our growth trajectory. Now such forces cannot be ignored. Our culture says that there are occasions when such forces do not have to be crushed, they have to be crushed and we have to retaliate and we can understand all this from the Gita. I want to give a message from this land that the nation is supreme for us. There is nothing to be measured in love for the nation, it will be pure, it will be 100 per cent and it will be 100 per cent.

We will always keep nation first!

We have to remember, we are Indians, Indianness is our identity and we are citizens of such a great country that there is no other country like this in the world, so will we allow our Mother India to be hurt? These forces emerge, some forces emerge from the point of understanding, they need to be explained. There are some forces who see that if India becomes the leader of the world, then many countries will be worried. After all, we are the same country that 11 years ago our economy was among the top 5 shaking economies in the world and who did we leave behind? Those who ruled us for centuries left behind the big powers, in the next two years, in less time, Japan and Germany will also be left behind. The contribution of the youth is immense.

Some people say that you have accepted that 80 crore people are poor. Look at how perverse their thinking is, you help so that you rise and go higher, and this is happening in the country.

Some people are recipe for chaos, they can only be critic, they can’t think in a positive way.

My message to them is that you should understand the essence of Gita, understand the message of Gita.

Before concluding, I would say that I told the Education Minister, Mr. Dharmendra, and I said this in the Rajya Sabha that Dharmendraji, I have a lot of pain in my heart. There are many people who have not seen the Vedas. Far from reading the Vedas, let alone studying them.

And in their speeches, they say that the Vedas are repositories of knowledge, so at least we should do something to fill these gaps in their lives.

I must congratulate Dharmendra Pradhan Ji,

They made it available to every Member. On behalf of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, under your guidance, I will disseminate the knowledge of Gita, which every member should have.
